We are reaching out today to introduce our big boy, Bear! This 2 to 3-year old, 80-pound Akita Mix was found lying on the side of a country road in very poor condition. An amazingly generous woman picked him up and brought him to our shelter. She paid to have Bear neutered as well as for as an additional surgery to correct his entropic eyes. Bear has been recovering well and is doing great! Here at Shafter Shelter we do our very best to temperament test each of the animals that comes through our doors. Bear has passed all aspects of the Safer Testing that is administered with the exception of the dog-to-dog test. Being an Akita, Bear naturally has an extremely high prey drive. Akitas are known to chase; especially small animals. They are also known to be one-dog homes. It appears to us that Bear was very well socialized while growing up as he has no problem making friends with strangers. We believe Bear would do great in a home where he is the only dog and with an owner who is familiar with his breed. Bear has been observed to want to take extreme interest in small dogs and has gently mouthed a poodle mix he was introduced to by a potential adopter. Because of this, Bear is not adoptable by Shafter Animal Shelter standards. We truly believe the right family for this sweet dog is out there somewhere and we are hoping by sharing his story that they may be found! This giant loves to be petted, play with toys and go for walks. He does well on a leash but does needs a strong handler. Please forward and share Bear so that he may have a chance at a new beginning!
